2023 benchmark
Travel and tourism reaches well beyond the hotel, restaurant or venue a guest sees. The federal benchmark includes the goods and services purchased directly by visitors, as well as the output and jobs needed to support that activity. That wider view makes the data useful when considering the scale, pace and operating demands behind hospitality environments.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis counts direct tourism output as domestically produced goods and services purchased by visitors, such as traveler accommodations and passenger air travel. Indirect output is the activity needed to produce those visitor-facing goods and services, such as hotel toiletries and fuel for passenger travel.
Because the figures cover the full travel and tourism industry, they are a national context for hospitality, not a measure of a single property, market segment or furniture category.
Sources and methodology
All statistics on this page come from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, “Travel and Tourism Satellite Account for 2018–2023”, published February 6, 2025. The report measures 2023 activity and distinguishes direct visitor spending from the supporting activity it requires.
The Bureau's travel and tourism topic page, checked October 15, 2026, identifies this 2023 release as its most recent set of travel and tourism statistics and notes that the series will no longer be produced regularly.
The page preserves the source’s reported figures and labels. Values are shown in the source’s stated units, with “T,” “B” and “M” used only as compact labels for trillion, billion and million.
